  • 1.  Does ChatGPT have a place in the office?

Lately, I've been fascinated by ChatGPT.

ChatGPT, launched in November, is a chatbot that when prompted with a few sentences of information, can write everything from an email, to a cover letter, to an essay, to a poem, to a story. You name it, ChatGPT can probably write it.

A friend told me about the tech and how she already incorporates it into various aspects of her work. She works in communications so she has used ChatGPT to craft social media captions and emails. She may not use the content created word for word, she said, but it sometimes serves as a useful springboard when ideas aren't coming to her. I've tried ChatGPT myself and the results are actually super impressive. The writing it produces is often indistinguishable from something written by a person! It's both amazing and scary.

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) like this has been around for a while, but ChatGPT is making the rounds in the news right now. It's raising concerns about plagiarism in the classroom and what changes could happen in the workplace as the tech becomes more sophisticated. According to an article from the Hill, 30% of professionals already use ChatGPT at work.

Have you tried using ChatGPT in the workplace? Would you ever use it? Is this kind of A.I. good, bad, maybe both?

@Arnie Grahl, you're a writer and editor. I bet you have some interesting thoughts on this!

@Taylor Evans Ghosal this is both interesting and scary on multiple levels. Being a Sci-Fi film aficionado, I can't help thinking about V.I.K.I from I Robot or Skynet from Terminator. More seriously, I am going to have to try it to see what I think about the writing it produces. I would suspect there are levels of things it would be fine at, and other things I would not want to use it for. A perfunctory email, for example, might be fine, where as I really doubt I'd be using it for my next feature story for the web. I'll let you know

@Arnie Grahl you make a good point! I don't think ChatGPT will completely replace writing because there are some things it just can't capture. I imagine a feature story written by A.I. could never stack up to a feature story written by a person.
