  • 1.  How can we do more with every opportunity we have?

We've talked a little about the power that songs have in our lives before, so it won't surprise you to know that sometimes a song hits a spot in my soul and makes me want to put it on repeat for hours. Today that song is Closer to Fine, and incently I sent a few of the lyrics to a friend of mine who responded, "That gave me chills. I've sung those words so many times and never have they meant what they mean right now."

So I went on a bit of an Indigo Girls YouTube journey, and came across this video: Amy Ray: The Persistence of Optimism

She starts by talking about how she and Emily (the other lead of The Indigo Girls, if you're unfamilar) were raised on the idea of positively impacting their community. The moderator asks, "did music sort of fuel the activism in you, or does the activism fuel the music, or is it [both]?" She answers, "both of us had the idea that whenever you do something,  you try to make it a little bit bigger than it is."

I love this idea, and I want to think about it for the next time I have an opportunity to do something. How can I make it bigger, or more impactful, for the community around me?

Do y'all have any examples of how you've done this? @Amy Hopkins, @Julie Aubry, @Elisa Meggs - I know y'all are really involved with volunteering and activism, do you have any advice?

@Quinn Drew I love this! I'm definitely going to watch that later. For me, what I've realized is that positive work in the community doesn't have to be enormous or flashy to have meaningful and lasting impact, but it does help to be thoughtful, intentional, and, of course, it helps if you have fun friends to encourage each other. For example, my friends got together for a celebration. To help share that joy, a friend suggested we make some party bags filled with cake mix, ingredients, and party supplies to drop off at each local community fridge. The need for food is more obvious, but the need for celebration is often overlooked; we wanted to elevate the opportunity for both. It was such a success (all bags were gone in a few hours) that we plan on doing this every time we celebrate from now on. It's also brought awareness of the community fridges and inspired some folks to support them more frequently. Sometimes, the little things add up :)
