  • 1.  I just moved, can volunteering help me make friends?

A friend of mine just moved out of state for work and hasn't been able to meet many new people outside of the office. (It's winter, so we're all hibernating!) I suggested that she find somewhere to volunteer.

Have you had any success with this? How did you get started?

@Brianne Haxton, I read your headline at first to be saying that you recently moved, and needed volunteers to help you. I was running for cover. Ha! But seriously, I think it depends greatly on the type of volunteering. If the volunteering involves something that entails mutual interest -- volunteering at a no kill pet shelter because you love pets -- and its a frequently occurring thing, then I feel that it would definitely help friendship formation.  Having said that, I've done any number of "one off" volunteer days and never saw any of the other volunteers ever again. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth my while, but would not have served the purpose of making friends. So I guess I would suggest looking for somewhere to volunteer that involves something the person really cares about, and that would have ongoing opportunities to be involved with the same people more than once.
