  • 1.  Is a Four-day Workweek the Way to Go?

    Posted 02-21-2023 14:47

Is a shorter workweek in our future?

From June-December 2022, 61 companies in a variety of industries across Britain participated in a trial of a 4-day workweek. Employees reported a better work-life balance, less burnout and stress, and higher job satisfaction. Companies did not see a change in revenue during the six-month period. The trial was so successful that 92% of participating companies are continuing the model, and 30% are making it permanent.

Do you think the 4-day workweek is the future? Have any Connectors experienced a similar work model?

The results are overwhelmingly positive, but do you think there are any cons to this model?

    Interested to hear everyone's thoughts!

I think one of the cons could be that you wouldn't be able to connect each day with people who did have a 5 day work week, especially if you were always off on the same day each week.  But the research is saying that it really wasn't an issue so it sounds great! It's nice having a week day off so you can take care of weekday errands. Three days off in a row would be great too because you almost need a whole day to recover, a whole day to do chores and then a day to relax and recharge!

Good point about the con of a three-day workweek, @Angela Lopez

I completely agree with you about three day weekends and posted something similar in the Open Forum. I think weekends can be just as busy as a workweek, so having a third day to fully recover is a nice benefit of a longer weekend.

The real question is can companies remain competitive on a global scale?  The level of productivity would have to increase by 30%. That might be possible if you have an extremely motivated, engaged and highly trained workforce using productivity enhancing technologies. But the whole implementation of this four day work week would need to be rolled out extremely well.

hi, @Mark Heuchert - I hear that, for sure. My organization does "summer fridays" where we can work an extra hour each day, then get 4 hours off on Fridays. I love it. There's no time lost in the week -it's just structured differently. I find myself more productive during the earlier days in the week because I have something to look forward to at the end of the week: an early release! If we would switch to a 4 day week, I think we could find a healthy balance between a couple of extra hours in the 4 days (I don't think I'd be for 4, 10 hour days... but I could be for 4 8.5 hour days or 9 hour days) and really look forward to that extra time off to play or be productive. I would love a 3 day weekend: one day to run errands/get things done, one to play, and one to rest. That's my real ideal.

It's interesting you bring up staying competitive, @Mark Heuchert

I think companies can find the balance between the needs and wants of their employees and keeping up with the competition! The UK study proves it can be done, but I agree that it needs to be implemented well.

@Quinn Drew to your point, I used to work at a company where we had a 5-day week during the summer, but our hours were reduced from 8-4 to 9-3. I felt much more rested during the day and had plenty of time to do my errands/chores in the evenings. Summer Fridays sound even better!
