@Taylor Evans GhosalI'm guilty of frequent revenge bedtime procrastination. It was a habit that I picked up during Covid times when stress levels were pretty high and I needed quiet time carved out for myself. Here's another article on revenge bedtime procrastination that mentions that it impacts students and (not surprisingly) women the most. This is the part that hit the hardest:
Revenge bedtime procrastination may also be on the rise because of COVID-19 and stress associated with stay-at-home orders. Surveys have found that working from home has often extended working hours, and women, in particular, have had a reduction in normal leisure time since the pandemic started. These factors may trigger stress and sleep procrastination and contribute to the fact that nearly 40% of people have had sleeping problems during the pandemic.
It goes on to mention the "widespread negative effects on health" of sleep deprivation. So yeah, yikes. Burnout is real and carving out time that should be spent sleeping to combat it is not a healthy approach.
@Maria Liccardo is a proponent of meditation. I that would be an arrow in the "avoiding burnout" quiver. As the weather is (finally!) starting to turn warmer here in Chicago, I'm taking more outdoor walks during the day. Even if it's quick, the sun and the air help reset my brain.
In many ways, it's just helpful to know that I'm not the only one who feels like this!

Reflection is a great tool to begin to mitigate burnout, @Quinn Drew
When I'm feeling burned out, it can take me a while to even START reflecting. I think that's why people need to know the signs --- so they can begin to heal. For me, I know I'm burned out when I stay up too late because I need "me" time (aka revenge bedtime procrastination) and when I do sleep, the quality of my sleep is not good.

I love that we're talking about #burnout in a conversation about embracing equity.
Thank you for including the links for signs/symptoms of burn out. I think it's really easy to dismiss burnout as "just stress" or something that can be solved with "a little less caffeine" (or maybe more?) and "more sleep." In reality, it's a much deeper issue and takes way more intentionality to address the underlying causes.
When I'm feeling on the verge of burnout, I take some time to reflect on what got me there, and address those roots. For example, I was working on a project that had a ton of really frustrating meetings every week and that stress compounded into bigger burnout feels. I could feel myself losing my motivation and inspiration for the project, so I asked if we could meet less, or structure the meetings in a different way to make them feel more productive. It was really helpful!

Burnout. It seems like everybody is talking about it, and we've all been affected by it at some point. It can be hard to pinpoint whether you're burned out or just stressed, but there are signs, like poor sleep, lack of concentration, and fatigue.
Learn more about burnout, including the signs and how to begin to recover, in this video featuring Katie Hare, Dr. Amy Imms and Jessica Poor. You can see more videos on our #IWD23 YouTube channel.
Let's start the conversation. What do YOU need to address burnout-in yourselves and those around you? Do you think it's important to talk about burnout with friends and family?
