@Taylor Evans Ghosal years ago, someone told me that the best way to lead was as myself. (You spend more of your adult life at work than you do anywhere else, so it seems like it would be exhausting to put on a fake persona every day!) By practicing authentic leadership, I've built the trust of my teams, and that has resulted in stronger collaboration. I try to lead with empathy with a healthy splash of humor.

Obviously, that requires some level of self-awareness and heightened interpersonal communication skills. You need to read the room and adjust accordingly. I've gotten better at that over the years and I hope that I'm always learning how to best assess situations to manage in ways that people feel valued, supported, and motivated.

    That's great advice @Brianne Haxton

I know there are some people who think when you go to work you should leave part of yourself "at home," but like you, I believe it's possible to balance authenticity with being professional. I've never been a leader in the workplace in the formal sense (like having a manager title), but when I have had the opportunity to take on leadership roles, I work to be empathetic and see all sides of issues that arise.
