Before COVID, I ran a program through a local youth soccer organization called AYSO that provides an opportunity for kids with special needs to play soccer. I would have matching uniforms for each of the kids, set up fun games that loosely involved some element of the game of soccer, and I tried to recruit volunteers to serve as one-on-one 'coaches' for each of the players.
And for 1 hour a week, the kids had an opportunity to be part of a team, interact with other kids, kick a ball (and my shins), and maybe even allow their parents a brief respite; to sit on the sidelines, and just cheer. Unfortunately, I had to put a pause on the program this past year. And since many of these kids have underlying health conditions that put them in a high-risk category for complications from COVID, we'll need to wait a bit longer before we resume. But I can't wait to get back out there, reconnect with these amazing kids, and hopefully recruit some new volunteers to help out. For anyone on the North Shore of Chicago, feel free to "connect" with me if interested!
