NASA sent two rovers to Mars all the way back in 2004: Spirit and Opportunity (The Adventure Twins). According to NASA, "Both rovers exceeded their planned 90-day mission lifetimes by many years. Spirit lasted 20 times longer than its original design until it concluded its mission in 2010. Opportunity has worked on Mars longer than any other robot-nearly 15 years." Yay! Awesome! Go Rovers!

The problem is that the rovers tend to get stuck as they're navigating the unknown terrain...

... which is where WE CAN HELP!

NASA is asking for volunteers "to help make future Mars rovers safer by labeling Curiosity images!" They'll give you a series of images the Curiosity rover took on Mars, and you'll draw polygons to label terrain types: sand, soil, bedrock, and big rocks.

FYI: as of this post, 3,444 people have volunteered, and the project is 25% complete:

Want to learn about the upcoming rover launch? The Perseverance is scheduled to launch sometime between 30 July and 15 August 2020!

This is awesome! And the closest I'll ever get to being an astronaut!
