What's something you've learned (or re-learned) this week?

Love this, Quinn! Thank you for asking me to reflect on this Friday the 13th.   This week helped me both learn and re-learn patience with both the students I work with and the awesome team of instructional staff that I manage.   It has been a tough week.   Students in the course I manage are struggling, instructional staff are frustrated, and I am in the middle trying to keep the train moving as best I can... an article was shared with me this morning and I pulled a quote from it that really struck me: "Because it is students whose educations are at stake, they bear much of the responsibility for remaking their ability to learn. But faculty members and administrators need to give students an environment that encourages intellectual habits like curiosity, honesty and participation in a community of inquiry. These habits aren't only the means to a good education; to a large extent, they are the education."  THIS is what it is all about for me and I needed this reminder - I also needed the reminder that we are all struggling in different ways, AND we are all amazing in different ways as well.   I am still learning, always learning, and keeping my growth mindset as best I can -- but need to be reminded sometimes so I appreciate you for doing so!
Here is the article for anyone interested: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/13/opinion/college-university-remote-pandemic.html?campaign_id=9&emc=edit_nn_20220513&instance_id=61236&nl=the-morning&regi_id=77463408&segment_id=92125&te=1&user_id=cc05c3f18ce1bac8de1eb6c28d0fe564

@Mandi Ginn-Franz, that Op-Ed makes me so sad. I hope we can see a rebound of resiliency in our youth and learning for the love of learning. Bad habits and mental stress are taking a toll on our students. I don't see too much of it in my high school junior, thankfully, but he tells me that some classmates  just don't try or don't show up. And even he knows that teachers are more lenient with grading and overall expectations. It's a bit of a vicious cycle. Not sure how we break it.

@Quinn Drew, this is a fun reflection...how have I grown this week? I'm re-learning that it's ok to break out of my weekday routines and go out and have fun once in a while mid-week. Since the pandemic began I've become very comfortable with my weekday routine of getting to bed at a reasonable hour and saving all the fun stuff for the weekends. But over the past few weeks the fun has crept into the week, and I'm re-learning how to balance routine with spontaneity.

For example, Thursday night I went to a really fun girls night out at a local wine shop showing the movie Big Night and they served dinner at the same time as the big party and dinner scene in the movie (and it was the main dish from the movie)!

Yesterday I also happened across a story about Chicago Full Moon Jam, which I had never heard of--percussionists, fire performers, dancing under the full moon every month--COUNT ME IN! They're going to be in my neighborhood on Sunday evening...a month ago I would have shrugged it off since it's technically a school night, but now I'm at a place where I'm feeling more flexible with my time.

And why would I ever take a pass on fire, drumming, dancing, and a full moon???

@Mandi Ginn-Franz - I love that quote you pulled. I've been working on "embracing curiosity mindset" but it can be really challenging, especially in a world that doesn't always value curiosity. Still working on it, though. :)

@Maria Liccardo - how was the Full Moon Jam? It was pretty cloudy by me, but I'm hopeful you still somehow got to party in the moonlight.

    Happy Monday, folx!

@Quinn Drew, sadly it was a little rainy so I bailed on my exciting expedition to dance under the full moon. Luckily, there's another full moon next month!
