I had the rare privilege of sharing my experience as a correctional officer working with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the Alvin Rotary Club yesterday February 24th, It was an opportunity to inform the members on some of the untold stories of what goes on behind the walls of prison that many of them are unaware of and how tough it is to keep these convicted criminals away from the streets.
It was also an avenue to let them understand the current overwhelming feeling of the officers doing the job and how short of staff the agency is at the moment due to the high level of inmates that needs to be secured at all times, I was able to tell stories of some of the inmates that have been rehabilitated for a while and their yawning for another opportunity to make a change. Some of them have had the chance to find a purposeful meaning for their life behind that walls and are looking forward to make the lessons they have learned to use in the free world.
Finally I informed the audience on my plan to further take the message outside of the community to larger areas where our young adults and teenagers can be accessed and share this stories with them so they can use it as a form of motivation and stern reminder that they cannot afford to throw away their freedom because of the choices they are making and will be making as they journey through life. I am hoping some of you that will read this can help me in this cause to take the message across our country and inspire our future leaders to the greatness they are capable of achieving as an American and more importantly as a global citizen.
